Kalama
Kalama, WA, began its life in the late 1800s when the Northern Pacific Railway planted its roots in the Columbia River-side town. Workers flocked to the area and created the town, building four hotels, two grocery stores, three saloons, one brewery, one printing shop, two shoe shops, one barber shop, two churches, one machine shop, one school, and a Masonic Hall.
The town suffered an economic blow when the Northern Pacific Railway moved its headquarters to Tacoma after finishing the rail line from Kalama to Tacoma. In the years that followed, Kalama moved on despite losing the Northern Pacific Railway headquarters and eventually became the small city it is today.
The small city is a family-friendly place for residents to call home. The city hosts its Kalama Fair every July, which includes a parade and various other ceremonies. The Kalama River-to-River Run/Walk is held around the same time. The city celebrates the past with antique cars in August for its Untouchables Car Show. The proceeds for the event support scholarships for local high school graduates to Lower Columbia College.
